The demand for case-level material handling continues to grow as companies strive to reduce their inventory through just-in-time mixed pallet order fulfillment. To meet this demand, the supply chain must become more efficient and more responsive, capable of fulfilling smaller order sizes at increased frequency. Traditional solutions such as conveyor accumulation are limited in terms of SKU diversity and storage density.
The Case-A-Matic?Case Storage & Sequencing System from HK Systems offers a dense case-storage solution with high throughput. With 7 load extractors operating independently, the Case-A-Matic can achieve throughput rates of up to 350 cases per hour per machine.
Operation
The Case-A-Matic incorporates a unique extractor mechanism designed to work with any size load that fits within a predetermined profile. As many as seven 揳rms?pivot up and down to envelop the loads and slide them on and off the shuttle. Each extractor may operate independently or in unison with another. Inventory is stored on standard, inexpensive shelving. This configuration results in dense storage from floor to ceiling.
During a typical storage request the Storage & Retrieval Machine (SRM) would pick up to 7 cases at once from a conveyor input point and deliver them to one or more shelf locations. A subsequent pick request would initiate a pickup from one or more shelf locations, accumulating up to 7 cases to be delivered to the outbound point.
Applications
The Case-A-Matic Storage & Retrieval System is an ideal solution for applications that require dense storage and high throughput for a diverse set of SKU抯 or tote collections. This may include:
Mixed Case Order Fulfillment
Work In Process (WIP) Inventory Buffering
Wave & Batch Sequencing
A typical case-picking order fulfillment application may include an automated depalletizer used to feed slugs of inventory into the storage system. Within each slug, groups up to 7 cases at a time are stored to each shelf location. Inventory may then be released in waves (multiple requests spanning the same inventory item) to downstream sortation and 搒tore ready?order-building work cells.
A typical WIP application may include mixed totes originating from an upstream process. The SRM would sort each tote to its applicable group within the storage shelving and batch pick the entire collection when requested. This type of configuration works very well with two or more unbalanced processes that require an intermediate sortation/storage buffer.
The entire Case-A-Matic application integrates smoothly with existing Warehouse Management Systems. An optional Equipment Management Software package provides a complete solution with a wide range of options from full inventory control to discrete location management.
